Based on observations, staff interview, and/or documentation on November 23, 2021, the following deficiencies were noted: The standard is non-compliant, specific findings include:
1. Smoking materials must be removed from patients receiving respiratory therapy, when oxygen deliver equipment is used or oxygen is delivered inside a patients room, no sources of ignition are within the area of administration (15 feet).
This code requirement was found non-compliant based on 11/23/2021staff self reported that on 11/18/2021 at 10:30 PM that a patient in room 527 (medical/ surgical unit) attempted to light and smoke a cigarette.
Patient was on 3 liters of of oxygen at a time, provided to patient via a nasal cannula.
The flame from the lighter was enriched by the oxygen, which then ignited patient.
