Based on document review, observation and interview, the facility did not adhere to the protocol used for administering aerosol generating treatments (technique for administering medication into the lungs).
Findings Include:
Review of the Lippincott Procedure entitled "Aerosol Treatment" revised on 08/21/2020 which is utilized by the facility for administering nebulizer treatments (treatment for administering medication to the lungs) included the following steps: perform hand hygiene prior to treatment, explain the procedure to the patient, wear gloves, auscultate breath sounds, remain with the patient during the treatment, remove and discard gloves after procedure, perform hand hygiene, clean/disinfect stethoscope, and again perform hand hygiene.
Observation on 05/13/2021 at 9:05 AM revealed that Staff (EE), Registered Nurse (RN) administered a nebulizer treatment (technique for administering medication into the lungs) and failed to clean and disinfect the stethoscope and perform hand hygiene after listening to the lungs of Patient # 3 with the stethoscope.
On 05/13/2021 at 09:34 AM Staff (A), Director of Nursing, verified above findings.
Observation on 05/13/2021 at 01:30 PM revealed that Staff CC, RN provided a nebulizer treatment to Patient #2 and failed to wear gloves, explain the procedure to the patient, auscultate breath sounds, and remain with the patient during the treatment.
On 05/13/2021 at 01:42 PM Staff (A), Director of Nursing, verified above findings.
