Based on review of facility policy, observation, and interviews the facility failed to ensure appropriate personal protective equipment was used during the insertion of an Intravenous (IV) line for 1 patient (Patient #2) of 2 patients observed.
The findings included:
Review of facility policy "Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan' last revised 1/1/2021, showed "...gloves are used when reasonably anticipated that there will be hand contact with blood, other potentially infectious material, non-intact skin or mucus membranes [phlebotomy]..."
Observation on 7/12/2022 at 9:15 AM, at the triage desk, showed Registered Nurse (RN) #1 performing an IV line for Patient #2. The RN did not have gloves on the hands when he inserted the IV line for the patient.
During an interview with the Senior Director of Emergency Services on 7/12/2022 at 9:16 AM confirmed the RN was not wearing gloves during the IV insertion and the RN failed to follow facility policy.
During an interview on 7/12/2022 at 9:35 AM, at the triage desk, with RN #1, the RN confirmed he did not have gloves on during an IV insertion and failed to follow the facility's policy regarding the use of gloves during an IV procedure.
