Based on observation and record review the facility failed to follow the policy approved by the governing body for the prevention of abuse for 1 of 5 patients (#1) surveyed.
Findings:
Review of patient #1's record revealed was brought to the facility on 10/27/10 through the emergency room. Further review of the record revealed the patient was then transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU) where the patient made an allegation of being struck by a female staff member. The patient complained in ICU of being hit and bitten.
Interview with the risk manager on 11/18/2010 at 10:45 AM reveals that patient #1 made an allegation of abuse that was investigated by the hospital, which was confirmed, but that the Florida Abuse Hotline was not notified as of the time of the survey.
Review of the hospital policy titled "Abuse/Neglect: Child, Aged, Disabled Person, or Spousal." dated 7/94 with a review date of 1/08 reveals the following statement, "All know or suspected cases of abuse, neglect or exploitation will be reported directly to the Florida Abuse Registry which is 1-800-962-2873."
