Every corridor shall provide access to not less than two approved exits in accordance with Sections 7.4 and 7.5 without passing through any intervening rooms or spaces other than corridors or lobbies. 19.2.5.9
Based on observation and interview, the facility failed to ensure every corridor provided access to not less than two approved exits without passing through any intervening rooms or spaces other than corridors or lobbies. This affected the second floor D wing that contains the facility's neonatal intensive care unit. The facility's census at the time of the survey was 303 patients.
Findings:
On 07/18/12 at 4:10 P.M. a tour was conducted of the second floor D wing neonatal intensive care unit with Staff A. The tour revealed the exit stairway on the West end of the wing's corridor. Traveling east from that exit stairway along the corridor, the tour revealed the corridor stopped at a 1191 square feet suite of rooms. Within that suite located on the south side of the wing, was the corridor's second stairwell exit. Continuing traveling east in the corridor, past the suite, revealed the wing's third exit. Thus, a person on the west side of the wing would have to pass through the 1191 square foot suite in the middle of the corridor to obtain access to a second exit.
This finding was confirmed by Staff A in an interview on 07/18/12 at 4:10 P.M.
