Based on observation and interview the facility failed to ensure that items utilized for direct patient care are furnished appropriately by not using items past expiration dates, and not identified as being under an extended use authorization by the United States Food and Drug Administration. This failed practice is likely to lead to poor patient treatment and delayed progression to goals.
The findings are:
A. On 2/21/2022 at 2:40 pm during observation on Floor 8 Surgical Medical Unit, the following was observed in the medical supply room.
1. Thirteen (13) Povidone-Iodine (used for skin disinfection (destroy or inactivate bacteria) before and after surgery) Swabstick packets expired 10/2021.
B. On 2/21/2022 at 2:45 pm during interview with Staff (S)#16 (Director of Materials) stated, "when supplies are stocked the ones from the back are moved forward and the new supplies are placed in the back for rotation. The stock room is checked daily for expiration dates by our staff, and nursing staff are asked to check the dates daily too."
C. On 2/21/2022 at 2:46 pm during interview with S#17 (8th Floor Unit Director of Nursing) confirmed the thirteen (13) packets of Povidone-Iodine Swabstick packets expired on 10/2021.
