Based on interview and observation , it was determined that the facility did not maintain the surgical suite area in such a manner that the safety and well-being of patients was assured.
Findings include:
On 9/8/14 at 3:45 PM, there were 11 outside shipping containers observed in the surgical corridor next to and near packaged sterilized items.
On 9/9/14 at 2:45 PM, there were 9 outside shipping containers observed in the surgical corridor and 16 outside shipping containers observed in the central sterile area next to and near packaged sterilized items.
On 9/9/14, the Chief Nursing Officer was interviewed. She stated that the outside shipping boxes should not be in either area.
The following was documented the "Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices" manual. Copyright 2008 AORN, Inc. page 588, "XI.b.7. Outside shipping containers should not be allowed in the sterile storage area because they serve as generators of, and reservoirs for, dust. (PNDS: 198)."
