Based on observations during a tour of the Emergency Department (ED) on July 2, 2015, it was determined that no EMTALA signs were posted. The hospital had general patient rights and responsibilities posted, but no specific EMTALA signs as required by this regulation.
MEDICAL SCREENING EXAM

Based on interviews with the Vice President of Emergency Services, the senior ED physician in house, and the Risk Manager completed on July 2, 2015, it was determined that the hospital lacks a written policy or procedure for the medical screening exam (MSE). While there was no evidence in the medical records reviewed indicating that patients are not receiving MSEs, the hospital is not covered by a current written policy. Surveyors were presented with a draft policy, but the draft will be a new policy when implemented.
