Based on record review and interview, the hospital failed to provide a safe setting for the patient in that there were fumes coming from the shower drain that had an obnoxious, moldy, gaseous odor in a room where the patient had breathing problem with suspected pneumonia.
Findings:
Review of the patient's medical record dated December 29, 2018, the patient's medical record documented a diagnosis of Severe breathing problems - suspected pneumonia.
An interview with Personnel #6 on 4/16/2019 documented that the patient complained to 90% of the people entering her room about the obnoxious, moldy, gaseous odor that was coming from her shower. Personnel #6 stated that there were work orders made out for repairs of the shower or whatever was causing the smell during the first few days of her stay. At one point, Personnel #6 stated that Patient #1 told her that the maintenance man left wet towels all over the floor and she was unable to get in the bathroom. After one maintenance worker came to make repairs, the odor got stronger. On Day 5, Patient #1 told the oncoming nurse for the day, Personnel #8 that she was having a problem with the smell from the bathroom. Personnel #8 stated they would just move her to another room. They did move the patient after she had endured the obnoxious, gaseous smell for 5 days.
