Bringing transparency to federal inspections
Tag No.: A0749
Based on document review, observation and interview, the facility did not ensure staff wore the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect themselves and/or patients and other staff from exposure to the COVID-19 virus. Specifically, two staff members were observed not wearing a surgical mask as directed by the facility. This could potentially expose staff and patients to the COVID-19 virus.
Findings include:
-- Review of the hospital directive sent out to all staff by Emergency Management on 4/14/2020 and 4/15/2020 indicated, due to the executive order of the Governor, all essential healthcare workers should wear a mask at all times when working. This included administrative and support staff.
-- During a tour of the facility on 6/2/2020 at 9:20 am, a registration staff member was observed conversing with another staff member with his/her surgical mask positioned below his/her chin. This was confirmed by the Infection Preventionist at that time of observation.
-- During a tour of the Emergency Department (ED) on 6/2/2020 at 10:25 am, Staff A, Registration Clerk, was observed walking through the ED without wearing a mask. This was confirmed by the Infection Preventionist at the time of observation.
-- Per interview of Staff A on 6/2/2020 at 10:30 am, he/she was just starting his/her shift and was screened on the way into hospital. Staff A stated there were not any masks available at the entrance and he/she had some at his/her desk to put on.
-- Per interview of Staff B, Registered Nurse on 6/2/2020 at 10:35 am, he/she was screening at the entrance where Staff A entered and indicated all staff members are given a mask when they enter and are screened for any symptoms of the COVID-19 virus along with a temperature check. Staff B indicated there are always masks available at each entrance.
