Portable Space Heaters

Tag No.: K0781

Based on documentation and staff interview, the facility failed to assure that portable space heaters being used within the facility are code compliant. This deficient practice has the potential to increase the risk of fire due to excessive heat and has the potential to affect all residents, staff, and visitors in one smoke zone. The facility had a capacity of 293 and a census of 212 at the time of the complaint inspection.

Findings include:

1. On 03/08/2022, documentation for the specifications on the space heater were reviewed. There was nothing in the documentation to indicate that the heating element would not exceed 212 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. On 03/08/2022, documentation showing the location of the space heater at the time of the incident was reviewed. The incident happened in a Nurse's station that contained patient sleeping rooms within the smoke compartment.

Review of the following NFPA Standard revealed: Portable space heating devices shall be prohibited in Healthcare Occupancies, unless both of the following criteria are met:

1. Such devices are used only in nonsleeping staff and employee areas.
2. The heating elements of such devices do not exceed 212°F (l00°C). 2012 NFPA 101, 19.7.8
