Based on interview, record and policy review the facility failed to ensure the right of the patient's designated representative to receive patient's personal belongings of 1 (SP#1) out of 3 sample patients (SP).
Findings include:
Review of sample patient (SP) #1 Discharge Summary dated 09/13/2020 at 4:22 PM documented admit Date: 08/21/2020 at 8:30PM, and Discharge Date: 09/13/2020.
Review SP#1 Belongings/Valuables documented admitted on 08/21/2020. Personal items verified by one registered nurse signature dated 08/22/2020 at 1:20 PM.
Reviewed SP#1 documentation with Assistant Vice President Quality Management on 11/05/2020 at 10:58AM, showed:
Final acknowledgement on 11/05/2020 at 1:33AM: No discharge reconciliation sheet. Stated cannot find it.
Acknowledged SP#1 personal belongings are currently in the possession of security. Stated there is no documentation that SP#1 belongings were reconciled, and family was notified.
Interview with Assistant Vice President Quality Management on 11/05/2020 at 1:33AM acknowledged current possession of SP#1 personal belongings. Stated there is no documentation that SP#1 belongings were reconciled, and family was notified.
Review of Policy Stat ID: 8232511, "Patient Belongings and Valuables" Last Revised: 06/2020 documented on discharge the patient's property must go with them as part of the discharge process. A thorough search must be done to reconcile all belongings notated in the "Patient's Belongings Record." Expired Patients: Valuables for an expired patient will be released to the patient health care surrogate notated on the patient's chart.
