Based on interview and record review, the hospital failed to follow its policy and procedure (P&P) for daily cleaning of patient rooms during a COVID-19 (a new virus strain causing mild to fatal symptoms in patients) pandemic (disease spread throughout the world). This failure had the potential to spread infection to patients, staff, and visitors.
Findings:
During an interview on 6/16/20, at 10:25 AM, with the Assistant Director of Environmental Services (ADE) , ADE stated, "The rooms of the COVID-19 positive patients are cleaned on discharge. In the event of a long term stay, we clean once a week unless there is a specific need. For a regular [non COVID positive] patient, we clean every morning and when needed."
During a review of the hospital's P&P titled, "High Profile Patient Room Cleaning", dated 10/1/18, the P&P indicated, "To ensure the complete and systematic daily cleaning and disinfection of each patient/resident room in accordance with Crothall's 10 Step cleaning procedure inclusive of appropriate patient engagement."
