Based on observation and staff interview, the facility failed to maintain proper heating appliances within the facility. The deficient practice could result in injury or fire, affecting 0 patients and any staff or visitors in 1 of 5 smoke zones. The facility has a capacity of 25 with a census of 9 at the time of this survey.
Findings include:
During the tour conducted on 09/13/2013, at approximately 3:30 p.m., it is observed that several small electric heaters were in place in the non-sleeping staff and employee areas. The space heaters heaters were not in operation. No documentation available to assure that the heating elements do not exceed 212 degrees F (100 degrees C).
Administrator, Administrative Staff A and Maintenance Staff A were present and acknowledged the findings. Findings were affirmed by Maintenance Director at the exit interview.
NFPA Standard: Prohibits the use of portable space heating devices in non resident and staff sleeping areas with heating elements that exceed 212 degrees. 2000 NFPA 101, 18/19.7.8
