Based on record review and interview, the hospital failed to require staff to have education, training, and demonstrated knowledge of the safe application and use of all types of restraints used in the hospital, including the use of vest restraints.
The findings include:
On 3/31/2011 review of staff training materials on restraints failed to find which specific types of restraints staff are trained on.
Review of the Daily Restraint Log for March 2011 revealed vest restraints were used on patients in Cape Coral Hospital on 6 occasions during this month.
In a telephone interview on 4/1/2011 at 4:15 p.m., the Risk Manager said staff are trained on hard and soft restraints and quick-release knots. She verified they are not trained on the application of the restraint vests.
