Bringing transparency to federal inspections
Tag No.: A0144
Based on document review and interview, the facility failed to ensure the patient received care in a safe environment.
Findings:
Patient #1 was admitted on 6/1/12 for observation and intravenous (IV) antibiotics for swelling and increasing pain of his right index finger. On 6/2/12 Patient #2 with Obstructive Chronic Bronchitis was admitted to the same room. On 6/7/12 Patient #2's serum IGG tested positive for pertussis. He was placed on "Droplet Precautions" and a sign was posted on the room door. Patient #1 and family were concerned when staff came into the room wearing personal protective equipment to care for Patient #2. Staff did not educate Patient #1 and family as to what if any precautions they should take and/or why. When Patient #1's family specifically asked about the sign, staff failed to provide education on droplet precautions.
