Based on document review & interview, the facility failed to ensure that surgical services were in accordance with acceptable standards of practice for 1 facility.
Findings include:
1. Review of the Association of Surgical Technologist (AST) list of Responsibilities lacked documentation that a certified surgical tech (CST) had suturing/closing being an approved task in the operating room.
2. Review of the Indiana Code 25-36.1-2-3 "Surgical technology" at http://iga.in.gov/legislative/laws/2021/ic/titles/025#25-36.1 lacked documentation that a CST could suture/close a surgical patient in the operating room.
3. On 01/12/2022 at 1430 hours staff A1 (Director of Surgical Services) confirmed that CSTs are allowed to suture/close a surgical patient after completing a 2-hour suturing course provided by the suture company.
