19.3.6. Corridors.
19.3.6.1 Corridor Separation. Corridors shall be separated from all other areas by partitions complying with 19.3.6.2 through 19.3.6.5 unless permitted by one of the following:
(4) Gift shops NOT exceeding 500 sq. ft. shall be permitted to be open to the corridor or lobby, provided that one of the following criteria is met:
(a) The building is protected throughout by an approved automatic sprinkler system in accordance with Section 9.7.
(b) The gift shop is protected throughout by an approved automatic sprinkler system in accordance with Section 9.7 and storage is separately protected.
Based on observations and interview, it was determined the facility failed to ensure one gift shop, exceeding 500 square feet, was provided with an electronically supervised automatic smoke detection system.
Findings include:
Observations during tour on 05/24/23 between 11:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. with Staff A (Director of Engineering Services) revealed the facility's gift shop, approximately 510 square feet, is located off of a main egress corridor behind the main reception center open to the egress corridor and failed to be equipped with an electronically supervised automatic smoke detection system. When the gift shop is closed, a dropped security gate creates a physical separation but fails to provide a smoke resistant separation between the egress corridor and a hazardous area.
Interview on 05/24/23 with Staff A confirmed the above findings, location, and existing conditions.
