Based on hospital documentation review and staff interviews the staff failed to monitor/measure the success of a corrective action plan implemented to ensure the staff followed the hospital's search and seizure policy and procedure.
The findings include:
Review of hospital documentation revealed the hospital investigated an incident that occurred on 02/05/2011. Review of the documentation revealed the hospital substantiated that the staff in the Search/Admissions Unit (SAU) and the Adult Admissions Unit (AAU) did not "carefully" search a patient's belongings on admission per the SAU specific policy. Review of hospital documentation revealed the AAU did not have a policy for search/seizure and the staff created a policy and procedure for search/seizure for the Adult units.
Interview with administrative nursing staff on 03/08/2011 at 1111 revealed the AAU did not have a policy for search/seizure of a patient's belongings. The interview revealed the staff created a policy and procedure for search/seizure for the Adult units. The interview revealed the SAU had a unit specific policy for search/seizure. The interview revealed the AAU policy was implemented on the Adult units on 02/15/2011. The interview revealed the SAU administrative staff had reviewed (re-educated) the SAU's specific search/seizure policy with the staff in the SAU. The interview revealed the hospital staff had not monitored or measured the compliance of the new AAU search/seizure policy to ensure the staff followed the new search/seizure policy and procedure. The interview revealed there had been no monitoring of the SAU staff to ensure the staff was following the SAU search/seizure policy since the re-education. The interview revealed the staff did not know if the corrective actions were successful. The interview revealed the hospital staff should have monitored the corrective actions to ensure the actions were successful.
