Based on document review and staff interviews, it was determined the facility does not maintain an EMTALA central log for patients seeking emergency care.
Findings include:
The facility does not maintain an EMTALA central log of all patients that presented to the emergency department (ED). A review of the Labor and Delivery Unit (L&D) log and ED log for November 8 - 10, 2012 revealed that patients that were treated, admitted or discharged from the L&D unit were not listed in the ED log.
During Administrative staff interviews conducted on December 4, 2012 at 2:00 PM Staff #1 stated that patients that present to the ED for emergency care whose private physicians are on the staff at the hospital, are sent directly to the L&D Unit where they are seen and treated. These patients are entered into the OB log and are not documented in the ED log.
