PATIENT RIGHTS: CARE IN SAFE SETTING

Based on observation and interview, it was determined the Facility failed to ensure the Emergency Department provided a safe environment for patients in that there was no call system in place for patients to use in 11 of 11 rooms; the patient bathroom in the Emergency Department had a non-functioning call light. The failed practices did not assure the staff could be alerted to patients that required assistance. The failed practice could affect every patient admitted to the Emergency Department. The findings were:

Observation of the ED 1030-1044 on 05/30/14 with the Director of Quality and Director of Emergency Services revealed the following:
A. In Room 3, there was no call light system available for patient use. The Director of Emergency Services stated there was no call system in any room.
B. In the patient bathroom, there was a call light system with a pull cord but when turned on the light above the door did not light up and it did not alarm at the Nurses' Station.
